The Montana Zero Energy House Project is designed to be a sustainable building demontration house and learning center comprised of two WWII MSU Family Housing homes. The two homes will be connected to one another and serve as "before" and "after" examples of building green. The 580 sq. ft. renovated Zero Energy home (the "after" home) will showcase practical and financially feasible ways for home owners and builders alike to to save energy and water while saving money and building a healthier home. The "before" and "after" homes will have an integrated facade including a connector with a demonstration courtyard. The connector will showcase assorted wall structures and tie together the two homes with the second home remaining in "before" condition on the interior for comparison.
The Montana Zero Energy House will feature:
- Energy-efficient lighting and natural daylighting
- Solar PV array
- Efficient use and reuse of water
- Energy efficient heating
- Maximization of passive solar
- Solar hot water heat
- Energy Star appliances
- No-VOC paints and finishes
- Resource-efficient materials
- Universal design
- Drought-tolerant, native species landscaping/xeriscaping
